FAQs

Volume of End-of-Life Tires (ELTs) globally is growing alarmingly. According to some estimates, only about 25% are recycled by organised and approved recycling units. Most Tire recycling plants are unorganized, small scale with poor pollution control and safety measures in place.
Further, as per government directives, Tire manufacturers are obligated to recycle a certain volume of tires equivalent to their production volumes. Tire manufacturers are looking to partner with organised recyclers to meet their recycling obligations.
Considering the demand-supply gap in Tire recycling, there is a strong need for organized and compliant Tire recycling operations in India

Terrablack is the new product line of sustainable Carbon Black products launched by Epsilon Carbon derived from recycling of end-of-life tires. Terrablack products have a lower carbon footprint than virgin carbon black (vCB), with similar performance as of vCB equivalent grades. Using recovered materials also supports conservation of non-renewable resources, while enabling responsible use of End-of-Life Tires (ELT) by preventing illegal incineration, land filling etc.

Terrablack is manufactured from both recovered Carbon Black (rCB) and Tire Derived Oil (TDO). These two ingredients are obtained from recycling of End-of-Life Tires (ELT).

Not really, we ensure that the products we offer meet all the technical requirements.

  • Carbon black from Tire pyrolysis is cleaned, milled, filtered, pelletised and dried to ensure the final product is comparable to Carcass grades of virgin Carbon Black which is called Recovered Carbon Black (rCB)
  • For Terrablack, rCB is blended with virgin Carbon Black in controlled amounts to ensure the blended grade matches the properties and performance of 100% virgin carbon black. Blending is done before pelletisation to ensure proper blending and superior performance for this, we have done extensive in-lab testing to ensure that quality and performance is not compromised.

We have 2 Terrablack products:

  • Terrablack 3310 – N330 blended with rCB (10%); matches the properties and performance of virgin N330
  • Terrablack 6615 – N660 blended with rCB (15%); matches the properties and performance of virgin N660

These products are a drop-in solution for customers in both Tire and non-Tire segments
We have developed these products after extensive testing* over a period of last 24 months. We have tested multiple rCB samples from multiple suppliers to develop these products. More such grades are under development. We are also developing 100% virgin Carbon Black grades produced from Tire Derived Oil as primary feedstock.

* Tests conducted in Epsilon’s state of the art lab at its production facility in Karnataka. Tests include both properties and performance in Compounding. Various samples of rCB were tested as-is, in-compound and after blending, the blended products were tested as-is and in-compound.

Terrablack has same application as virgin Carbon Black into Tires, Non-Tire Rubber, Plastic Masterbatches etc as they are a drop-in solution for manufacturers of these products. Of course, these products go through a qualification process, especially in the Tire industry which can take anywhere between 6-12 months.

Currently we are sourcing Recovered Carbon Black and Tire Derived Oil from external suppliers until we commission our Tire recycling operations. Epsilon will commission a fully integrated Tire recycling plant in Karnataka with a capacity to recycle 30,000 MT of Tires in FY26, which will generate 9,500 MT of Recovered Carbon Black & 12,000 MT of Tire Derived Oil.

We are a Responsible Care & ISSC Plus certified organization for being safe, compliant, sustainable & circular in our manufacturing processes.

The Global Warming Potential (GWP, in kg CO2 equivalent) of Terrablack is at least 40% lower than that of Carcass grades and at least 50% lower than that of Tread Grades of virgin Carbon Black. Further, when we blend rCB in vCB, for the quantum of virgin Carbon Black replaced, Terrablack lowers the GWP by 40-50% as the case may be. We are continuously researching to further enhance the sustainability impact of Terrablack.

Recognising the finite nature of Carbon resources, we are committed to sustainable practices and have set clear environmental objectives to lessen reliance on these resources, ensuring long-term viability and aligning with our strategic vision.
Entry into the sustainable Carbon Black market is a crucial part of the ‘Environment’ element of our overall ESG objectives, as it allows us to offer a sustainable yet high-performing alternative to end users of Carbon Black, and a truly circular product to the Tire industry.
We are proud to say that Epsilon is the only Carbon Black manufacturer who is establishing its own fully integrated Tire recycling plant. This shows our commitment towards Sustainability towards our organisation as well as our partners’ Sustainability objectives.
